The Balkan Snapshots Film Festival was created in 2006 to give an opportunity to independent filmmakers and artists to show their works to a Western audience.
The aim of the festival is to promote fresh local talent via a selection of conventional and unconventional works that address issues of identity and expression in creative ways. Works, often from first-time directors, that have the quality and the courage to go beyond the stereotyped topics (war, misery, no future...) that are so often associated with the Balkans and to break free from the geographical and historical boundaries that so often label the work of the artists developing in these European regions.
The third edition of this festival took place in Amsterdam on the 9, 10, 11 October 2008. Within the frame of the Festival ReKult and Auropolis took care of the art exhibition: BAF - Balkan Art Fluxion.
By gathering several generations of artists coming from geo-social surroundings of the Western Balkans we experience "charging" by talkative and sincere expressions based on long term art practice, education and dense life experience. Through diverse media this group of people is showing us how they can push themselves, techniques and concepts by following original individual sources for comprehension of modern life's dynamics. From socially engaged art criticizing brutality of unawareness to high aesthetics of both traditional and new media dealing with nostalgia, each and every artist is openly sharing personal moments of creation not taking distance from the artwork.
This engagement in expression and freedom to experiment with a form reflects rumbling Balkan mentality shaped in sophisticated personal overviews of life in urban environments. ...
